Quality depends heavily on what you order. Ribs, pulled pork and beef tips travel well. Steak and anything fried do not — steak keeps cooking in a sealed container, and fried items soften.

The most expensive by a clear margin, and the reason is not the delivery fee. Menu prices inside a delivery app are commonly set above dine-in to absorb the platform commission, before the service fee, delivery fee and tip stack on top.

So you pay more per item and then pay fees on the inflated subtotal, which is also what the tip is calculated against.

You get the same quality compromises as takeout, plus additional time in the box.

For value, dine-in during Early Dine. For convenience at a fair price, collection. For delivery, go in with the knowledge that you are paying a substantial premium for the convenience — which is a legitimate choice, just not a cheap one.

And if you are ordering steak for collection or delivery, order it one level rarer than you normally would.
