Steak or Chicken? The Numbers Say Something Unexpected

Steak or Chicken? The Numbers Say Something Unexpected

The default assumption is that chicken is cheaper and lighter than steak. On this menu that is true in some places and firmly false in others.

Here is what the numbers actually show.

On price, they are closer than expected

The cheapest chicken dish is Grilled BBQ Chicken at $13.49. The cheapest hand-cut steak is the 6oz Sirloin at $13.49. Identical.

The chicken section spans $13.49 to $14.99 — a $1.50 range. The steak section spans $12.49 to $33.99. So chicken is not cheaper at the bottom; it is simply narrower.

Road Kill at $12.49 is the cheapest beef entrée and undercuts every chicken dish on the menu.

On calories, it depends entirely on the treatment

Grilled: Herb Crusted Chicken 260, Grilled BBQ Chicken 300, 6oz Sirloin 250. All three are in the same territory and all three are lighter than most starters.

Fried: Country Fried Chicken 780, Chicken Critters 480. Against a 6oz sirloin at 250, the fried chicken is three times heavier.

And Country Fried Sirloin at 1,180 shows the same effect on beef — the same sirloin that is 250 grilled becomes 1,180 battered, fried and gravied.

So the cooking method matters far more than the animal. A grilled chicken breast and a lean sirloin are nutritionally similar; a fried version of either is not.

  • Cheapest chicken and cheapest steak — both $13.49
  • Cheapest beef overall — Road Kill, $12.49
  • Lightest entrée — Herb Crusted Chicken, 260 cal
  • Lightest steak — 6oz Sirloin, 250 cal
  • Fried anything — three to five times the grilled equivalent

Which to order

For the fewest calories: Herb Crusted Chicken at 260 or a 6oz sirloin at 250. Genuinely interchangeable on that measure.

For the most protein per calorie: Grilled BBQ Chicken, a marinated half-pound breast at 300 calories.

For the best value per ounce: a large sirloin. At $1.44 per ounce for the 16oz, nothing on the chicken page competes.

For flavour: a ribeye, and it is not close. That is what you are paying the extra calories for.
