Call-Ahead Seating Is Not a Reservation
Call-ahead seating is widely offered and widely misunderstood. It is not a reservation and it does not hold a table for you.
What it does is put your name on the waiting list before you arrive, so you are further up it when you get there.
What it actually does
You call, give your party size, and your name goes onto the same waiting list used by people standing in the lobby. The clock starts when you call rather than when you walk in.
That means you arrive partway through a wait you would otherwise be starting from scratch. On a busy Friday evening that can be the difference between forty minutes and ten.
It does not mean a table is being held empty for you, and it does not guarantee you will be seated on arrival.

Using it well

When it does not help
Large groups. A party of eight or more needs tables combined, and no amount of calling ahead creates the space on a busy evening.
Peak weekend evenings at a popular location, where the wait can be long enough that call-ahead compresses it rather than removing it.
